Learn the art of pine needle basketry with exhibiting artist, Shakeeka Brooks in this hands-on workshop. Using longleaf pine needles and simple tools, you’ll create a basket rooted in Southern and African craft traditions. All supplies are provided.
This session supports the Gaston County Museum’s mission to preserve and share our region’s history through art, stories, and everyday objects. All skill levels are welcome—come ready to listen, learn, and weave something of your own.
Shakeeka Watts Brooks is an artist, pine needle basket weaver, freelance graphic designer, children's book author and illustrator. She spent her childhood in rural Anson County, NC. As a teen, she attended Anson High School (Wadesboro, NC). Later, she graduated from Wingate University (Wingate, NC) with a Bachelor Of Fine Art Degree, and a concentration in Advertising and Graphic Design. In 2018, she started "Hand Works By Shakeeka," an online arts and craft shop.
Her pine needle basketry has been on display at the Falling River Gallery (Albemarle, NC), Stanly Arts Guild and Gifts (Albemarle, NC), Hart Witzen Gallery (Charlotte, NC), Charlotte Arts League (Charlotte, NC), Mint Museum (Charlotte, NC), Guild of Charlotte Artists (Charlotte, NC), Pullen Arts Center (Raleigh NC), Raleigh Fine Art Society (Raleigh, NC), Gaston County Museum (Dallas, NC) and the Drake Gallery (Wadesboro, NC), just to name a few. Her children's books can be found in the Charlotte Mecklenburg County Libraries and surrounding county libraries. She has participated in over 100 arts and craft vendor events and festivals.
